Introducing Kaniyang – Our Joint Venture

12 November 2024   NEWS

The Kaniyang Grounded Joint Venture (‘Kaniyang’), a partnership within the Grounded Group of
Companies, is 51% owned by respected Indigenous leader Mark ‘Smithy’ Smith.

Recognising the enduring relationship First Nations peoples have with the land, Grounded created
Kaniyang to foster open and meaningful dialogue with Indigenous leaders and communities. At the
core of Kaniyang’s mission is bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
through genuine partnerships, shared initiatives, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge and
perspectives in the remote regions of Western Australia where Grounded operates. This approach
fosters deeper cultural understanding and enhances Grounded’s practices.

Under Smithy’s guidance, Kaniyang projects honour the wishes of Traditional Owners, preserve their
practices, and ensure respect for Indigenous heritage while protecting significant cultural sites.
Kaniyang is also deeply committed to supporting the growth and prosperity of Indigenous
communities by fostering social and business ventures that deliver lasting socio-economic benefits.

Kaniyang draws on Grounded’s resources and capabilities while being uniquely positioned to develop
projects in culturally significant areas. Smithy plays a vital advisory role, ensuring that operational
objectives align with the preservation of cultural and environmental values. His deep knowledge,
unique perspectives, and strong connections further enhance Kaniyang’s ability to operate with
respect and effectiveness.

In addition, Kaniyang is dedicated to providing ongoing training, employment, and support for
Indigenous Australians while fostering cultural awareness within Grounded to promote an inclusive
and rewarding workplace.
